For families seeking indoor-outdoor fun, head to the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park, just south of downtown. Children can see dinosaur bones and other nature-themed exhibits inside, then run around the gardens out back; there's even a dedicated Get Dirty zone, where kids can dig in compost bins and play inside a house made from willow branches. Because of the city's sprawling layout, many of these museums are far apart, but a few of the major ones are clustered around Museum Row, the stretch of Wilshire between Fairfax and La Brea Avenues, making it easy to visit at least two in one day, maybe even three. Kansas is a relatively young state, with the first pioneers arriving circa 1827. A few other historic buildings from the area have been added to the museum. In addition to the museum, Independence offers various events and activities that celebrate the Ingalls family’s legacy. The annual Laura Ingalls Wilder Days festival, for example, brings fans together for a weekend of fun, including historical reenactments, pioneer demonstrations, and crafts. First Congregational Church – The historic First Congregational Church in De Smet was organized by Charles Ingalls in 1880, with the town’s first religious service taking place in his home on February 29, 1880.
The Sod House on the Prairie features acres of restored prairie with tall grasses, flowers, and sod houses so you can experience the prairie as Laura knew it. These authentically built replicas feature dirt floors, grass roofs, and sod walls. The Little House on the Prairie Historical Site is located 13 miles southwest of Independence, just off Highway 75. Independence itself is located in southeast Kansas at the junction of Highways 160 and 75. The site is about 125 miles from Wichita, Kansas, and about 180 miles away from Kansas City, Missouri.
